Mask On!

Today's Theme: Treat yo self!

Do you even mask?

So, its Monday evening and you've just stepped put of the shower and are contemplating wether or not you should take an extra 15 minutes in the bathroom to give your face some love, the answer is YES.

But, first things first, prep, one of the biggest mistakes we all tend to make when using a mask (besides leaving it on for too damn long) is not prepping your skin first. If you are going to take the time to put on a mask you want to make sure you are getting a real bang for your time.

So take the time to cleanse your skin with a gentle exfoliating scrub, something with round particles like jojoba beads that will roll over the skin and break down the dirt on your skin. The one linked below is a favorite of mine:

In addition, you can steam your face to help dilate your pores, it's relaxing and you can just take a hot shower or get a washcloth dipped in very warm water.

This is my go-to it's a 3 in 1, that I sometimes use as a mask too but mainly just for cleansing purposes.

Now that your skin is prepped and set to go, simply apply the mask with your fingers or if you're feeling fancy, use a clean foundation brush.

Time is important, am I right? In fact, sometimes we all feel like we need more of it, but in the case of face masks, more time is not necessarily a good thing. Leaving your mask on longer doesn't magically give you any added benefits, it might actually have the opposite effect.

Leave a face mask that is supposed to moisturize on too long, and you may wind up irritating your skin. Leave a clay mask on too long, and you may need a hammer and a chisel to remove it!
So be sure to pay attention to the directions on any product you use, if it says to leave the mask on for 20 minutes then do just that - set a timer so you'll remember.

Pro Tip: If you’re using a clay mask, chances are it will begin to change colors as it dries, so use that as a hint and if you reach the point where you try to smile and feel the mask cracking, rinse it off boo.

Clay masks usually contain bentonite which is found to be effective in cleansing the pores. It also helps in healing skin blemishes, leaving the skin invigorated.
