Detoxing 101
8/30/2017 03:45:00 pm
Y'all, my trip to the north was nothing short of lit and extremely tasking on my body. So, in an effort to feel like myself again (fatigue is the name of the game since getting back, which does nothing for your body's natural immunity🙄), I'm doing a 2-day tea detox.
DETOXIFICATION DEFINED
Detoxing means different things to different people. To me, it refers to aiding the body's natural systems with their processes to eliminate toxins. Toxins come in different forms such as environmental chemicals, excess medication in the bloodstream (which is why I'm so anal with what I take in terms of meds).
How do you define detoxing?
ROLE OF GREEN TEA IN A DETOX
Now before you get all wrapped up in the green tea hype, I'd just like you to understand that green tea doesn't literally detox your body it just contains active ingredients that support your body's natural ability to detox.
Green tea does not actively detox toxins all on its own but is packed with natural polyphenols that support the body's normal detox system. Polyphenols* work two ways: they either have a direct impact on your liver which is the body's major detox organ and they are antioxidants, fighting free radicals.
Your skin, respiratory system, immune system, intestines, and kidneys all work together to help the body detox but a large part of the responsibility falls to the liver. When toxins reach your liver they are chemically altered to reduce their toxicity, then they are sent to the kidneys for elimination through urine. Sounds simple right? But it's not. It's one of those many complex body processes that consist of many different phases that we are completely unaware of.
Pro Tip: Enjoy sip by sip, rather than gulp by gulp.
When detoxing be sure to pick a period when you are not too busy so that sticking to the detox won't be as challenging. It is recommended that you increase your fruit, nuts and vegetable intake a few days prior to detoxing (a lot of people prefer to detox with just tea and cut out solid foods, I ain't about that life) and increase your overall water intake to at least 3 liters daily.
Try a green tea cleanse and discover how good it feels to detoxify and refresh your body. After all, nothing deserves a good spring-cleaning more than your body.
*Polyphenols: are reducing agents, and together with other dietary reducing agents, such as vitamin C, vitamin E and carotenoids, referred to as antioxidants, protect the body's tissues against oxidative stress and associated pathologies such as cancers, coronary heart disease and inflammation.
